Who are we fooling?

This is probably the saddest wedding song I've ever heard.

Love it.

  2. "So we're back here again
Tip toeing round the edge of the end
Wondering who will be last to admit
    That we're finally over"

Is it a song about marriage? Not so much the case. It's a song about the wedding.

    "Better or worse
But what else can we do?
    When better or worse
    I am tethered to you
If it's not either of us
Tell me who are we fooling?"

The chorus resounds with the wedding vows. For better and for worst. In sickness and in health.

    "Cause real love
    Is hard love
    It's all we have
    It's a break-neck
    Train wreck
    It's all we have"

They are mourning the loss of their relationship, because it will never be the same again. The magic and fantasy of the dating process will come to an end as they finally come together and settle down and begin to struggle with living with each other and making it work in marriage.

    "So we're back here again
Turning away from the edge of the end
    Arm in arm"

This wedding marks the end of their beautiful dating relationship. It marks the beginning of a marriage. And they will be fooling themselves to think that marriage is easy.

But they still carry on. And that, is what makes this song beautiful.

Because in this song, unlike all the rest, love is more than just a feeling.

"This beautiful tangle that's bruising us blue
Is a beautiful knot that we just can't undo"

Sometimes it hurts in love, but sometimes it lasts instead.
