A Different Day

Mom: Are you coming back late?
Justin: I'm coming back drunk.

Thus began my day of difference.

I went to art friend to become a friend of art friend.

Friend of Art Friend. Friend of Art Friend

I also bought a lot of paint, brushes, varnish and a big canvas.

Then off to Zhi Han's house where together with Jia Yan we did painting.

Only Justin can buy art materials for a girl's birthday and make her paint her own present.

But oh how beautiful it was!

She chose the picture of a sunset, and the blending brush made quick work of the beautiful yellow, orange, red and purple blend.

We only completed the background, but it's awesome nonetheless.

Till next time.

Then I went for a farewell party for my religion prof.

It was the most meaningful party I've ever attended.

Our prof didn't want to uproot, but didn't have much of a choice.

Kudos to the beautiful girl in my course who saw how we could encourage him and organised the whole party.

The professor later said how he really needed this.

He's not one who cares about grades, but about influencing lives.

And seeing how we bothered, he was so moved.

It was his first post module party ever.

And he shared a story I'll remember.

He got his PHD, he celebrated, and then he was jobless for months.

Rejection letter after rejection letter.

He had the option of going into banking, but if he did he knew all his studies would come to an end and he would stop reading and writing academically.

You can't eat your PHD for a living.

So he went for the next best job.

That of a toilet cleaner.

It would give him cash to live on, and time to continue reading and writing.

There was a tough interview for the job, but by sheer deduction and the power of sociological observation, he came out tops in the interview.

Then he began work.

*WARNING - GRAPHIC CONTENT AHEAD*

In those days there was no sanitary pad bin, so there was blood everywhere in the women's restroom.

He said how he was happy to see shit for the first time in his life coz he was traumatised by the sight of blood.

Oh and in Italy, he got commission for cleaning especially dirty cubicles.

So he's happy to see more... crap.

Anyway, he was fascinated at work.

Why is it women's toilet dustbins were full of paper while men's remained empty.

After further observation he figured... Men just cough out loud. Women use tissue.

And his anthropological mind lighted up.

He began observing morals and manners in the bathroom.

Like... why would people write on walls in cubicles?

Toilets are places of liberation.

In more ways than one.

Here you are alone, you're relieved, and you're sometimes inspired.

And thus you write on walls.

So my lecturer began studying these wall paintings anthropologically, as he cleaned them off.

He wrote all of them down, and wrote a book on it.

That book landed him his first lecturing job, and the rest was history.

For me, a university student trying to earn a humble living by cleaning toilets, he was an absolute inspiration.

Now please, hire me.

THE SINGLE MOST AMAZING VIDEO I'VE EVER SEEN, POSSIBLY IN MY ENTIRE LIFE

So beautiful, so beautiful.

It does not matter if you don't understand the language. Just listen to the song, especially the transition.

If you want the subtitled version, click here- But watch this one first.

I Take Issue

On monday I cycled 32km.

My calves screamed out in pain.

On tuesday I fenced for the first time in weeks.

On wednesday I went kampong fishing and visited 3 fish farms.

My inner thighs hurt like crazy.

Today I played xbox kinex and rock band on the Wii all afternoon and fenced in the evening.

I was smashed. I fought so badly I got cut and bled.

To be honest, I've been riding the wave of coolness being known as a fencer. But the hard truth is that behind the beautiful sabre with elvish written on it that I'm so proud to carry around, I'm actually quite a lousy fencer.

I fence like a little girl.

I look scared each time I fight. I charge down the piste towards my opponent and then slow down and hesitate when I get into range, afraid to attack.

Whatever. I'm not emo over this.

This can be worked on through training and I'll grow worthy of my blade's inscription in due course. I'm a true blue defender who needs to gain some skill and confidence in attacking.

So what am I emo about?

Nothing really, it's just that... I've been with people all week.

This introvert needs to recharge.

I'm drained, and when I'm drained I become more emo when alone. And I get upset when people try to cheer me up because I need to be emo today so I can be happy tomorrow. Just let me mope and blog and I'll be fine.

Gah. It didn't help that I did research on romance yesterday for that blogpost. Feels as though a sleeping lion has been awakened in me and it's making me more emo. I take issue with pop culture's representation of romance not only because of the pre-marital sex it condones but also because of how impossible it is to be a good man.

Mister Darcy from Pride and Prejudice... Edward and Jacob from the Twilight series... guys the girls love to love... Did the girls reading romance novels ever realise that these guys are all fragments of another woman's imagination? Romance novels are mostly written by women, and the guys they portray... Are not all that possible.

You know what it is to "spoil market"? It's when you show people something so awesome that everything else they see of it's kind can never satisfy them. Such unrealistic portrayals of perfect men make guys in really look unsatisfactory to girls. It's quite easy to get disillusioned with real people after you've seen such awesomeness, though only in fiction. This phenomenon is also what happened when Avatar came out but that seemed more severe. Seeing a better world than ours, people felt disillusioned with our world and wanted to commit suicide.

I fell better now having said all this.

Maybe a funny photo is in order.

Oh and I bought ink today. Black ink.

Crime Scene

Marx Was Wrong

Love is the opiate of the masses.

I mean love in the sense of romance.

What is the meaning of life? Well, the world seems to say the answer is love.

But we live in a culture so saturated with impossibly complicated ideas of romantic love.

It's even more complex than gender I tell you... Gender has a starting point. But love, oh goodness, it's such a complicated topic.

What is love? And what is romance supposed to be like?

We have the idea that love is like oxygen, love is a many splendored thing, love lifts us up where we belong, all we need is love...

Feel a tingle down the back of your spine when you listen to the greatest love songs of our time all sung back to back? That must be love right?

Well if love is a feeling we feel when we feel a feeling we never felt before, then yeah maybe.

My concern though is what happens after all the feelings come into the open- Love is declared, love is reciprocated, and most of the time if it get to this stage (it's far more complicated than this) they end up in a relationship.

Now what?

Well looking at the clip from Moulin Rouge, the next thing was them having sex.

And this is what seems to be what our society says.

What's the purpose of having a relationship?

Hmmm. I don't know exactly, but according to the media, sex is definitely in.

Almost all the songs we're hearing today are about sex, from Katy Perry's Teenage Dream and Bruno Mars' The Lazy Song to practically all of Gaga's songs.

But it's not a new phenomenon.

Remember Vengaboys' Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! and Red Hot Chilli Peppers' Californication from a decade back?

And it goes further back to before I was born with Labelle's Lady Marmalade, Jefferson Starship's Miracles and Abba's Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) etc.

Yes Abba too.

Half past twelve
And I'm watching the late show in my flat all alone
How I hate to spend the evening on my own

Seriously, what did you think Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) was about?

I've been listening to songs about sex since before I was born.

But at least back then it was more subtle and you might not have realised the sexual undercurrents.

Now it's a little more blatant.

In your face with almost a billion views.

And it's not just the music industry.

Almost every show I watch assumes that once a couple gets together, they copulate.

Well maybe that's more a western idea, but what else is there to watch but American TV? Our local Chinese dramas are... drama... to a point where I can't stand watching them. Well most of them.

(Maybe I should finally try watching Korean shows. I must ask my friends if K dramas provide us with better model relationships.)

Look. I don't want sex in my relationship till I'm married.

But the current portrayal and thus understanding of romantic relationships does not fit my hope.

Thus I reject their mainstream definition of romance, but don't have a clear idea of a better alternative yet.

Not a bad parody of the video above. Thanks Dave.

Not all media is bad of course. But quite a bit of it is.

I no longer listen to love songs. Their portrayal of love is not what I agree with.

The Only Exception is one of the few exceptions, along with Falling In Love at a Coffee Shop.

Simple songs about the little things.

I just wish for more shows that are more simple, sincere, and true in their portrayal of love. Love does not need to be a fire that is out of control. It can be a gentle whisper. Like this:

We need more shows like Fighting Spiders and A Walk to Remember.

It should be norm and not the exception.

Look at the parting scene between Peter and Sam starting at 5:09 in this episode.

They don't kiss. They don't hug. They don't hold hands. Not even close.

But it is beautiful.

I'm sorry, but I think love is not in the blazing fire or the wind tearing up the rocks or the earthquake shaking the foundations of the mountains.

It's the gentle whisper.

It don't make good TV, but it makes good love.

Teenage Dream

I hate Katy Perry's Teenage Dream.

Because I can't get it out of my head. It's so catchy.

But the lyrics talk about sex.

The I came across this cover that changed the lyrics:

I finally found you, my missing puzzle piece.

I'm complete.

Contradictions Within the Same Carriage

Watched Dylan Dog Today

Quite a cheap movie.

I kept thinking Brandon Routh was going to lift up the werewolves who were attacking him and throw them through the wall.

Or lazer beam them with his eyes.

Or fly after the demons.

Goodness, he's right out of Superman Returns.

But yeah, he didn't bleed through the whole movie.

Maybe he really is Superman.

Oh and I nearly died (metaphorically speaking) when his friend who died (literally speaking) and came back as a zombie, but could not accept his new nature, attended the zombie anonymous support group.

Hi everyone... I'm Marcus.

*Hi Marcus.*

Well... I... I... Died.

*It's okay Marcus, we know how you feel.*

The ultimate thumbnail

Let's all change our thumbnails.

(I mean our blogger profile pic, not our thumb's nail.)

(Actually... that could work too...)
