The Blind Spot (El Punto Ciego)

I warn you, this short film is scary.

It's one intense psychological thriller.

And it's not meant for the young or faint of heart.

(Melanie and Marilyn, give this a skip.)

But I'm posting it here because it is so experimental and groundbreaking in its filming technique, which in turn made this show all the more unsettling. This technique used to convey the story is in itself so foreign that it already alienates the viewer and gives a sense of the uncanny- we know we're supposed be watching a film but it doesn't look like any film we've ever seen and that sense of the unknown makes us feel all the more uncomfortable.

The film is disturbing, and because that's exactly what it was trying to achieve, I think it's a great film and worthy of mentioning here.

  4. Hey Rachel you're under the young and faint hearted category! Not supposed to watch!

But since you have... it's about this guy who pretends to be nice and invites the girl to his home for a place to spend the night, but he's actually a serial killer. The other guy who had just spoken to him on the train is a doctor who senses something is amidst and comes to her rescue.

What makes this film so amazing to me is how midway they split the screen into 2 sides, and both show things unfolding at a different time. One side shows the series of events leading to how she got to the guys house, while the other shows her inside the house already and how she found out he was a serial killer and tried to get out before he got home.

Both stories intersect at the door where she enters/tries to exit, and there scenes combine.

That was an amazing scene because you feel not just the excitement of her almost getting out on one side of the screen, but also the sickening feeling of dramatic tension in seeing her first step into the house of who you now know is a serial killer- both of these emotions play up at the same time, which is something uncommon to feel and that made me think this film was truly something new.

It's not your usual horror frightening monster jumping out of the closet scary. It's more playing with the ideas of the unknown, which is even more thrilling.
