A minor argument erupted during last nights session.
It was regarding whether the songs of Bruno Mars were more emo than those of Jon Foreman.
It was actually more a debate about whether graphic, purely physical symptoms of emo were more emo than metaphorically physical (albeit just as graphic) reflections of emo.
And that was the day that I promised, to never join this group, ever again.

I'd catch a grenade for ya
Throw my hand on a blade for ya
I'd jump in front of a train for ya
You know I'd do anything for ya
I would go through all this pain
Take a bullet straight through my brain
Yes, I would die for you, baby
But you won't do the same
-Bruno Mars, Grenade
If it doesn't break your heart
It isn't love
If it doesn't break your heart
It's not enough
It's when you're breaking down
With your insides coming out
That's when you find out
What your heart is made of
-Jon Foreman, Yet

ReplyDeleteI think metaphorically physical reflections are more emo, and I like them better too as a result. Subtle descriptions contain more depth than blatantly obvious ones.
And thank you for introducing me to Jon Foreman, I like that song!
Awwww thank you.
ReplyDeleteI guess you're right, even more so because something so physically defined is limited in how far it can be interpreted and understood. Metaphorical pain knows no boundaries, but a flesh wound does.
Jon Foreman is the lead singer from Switchfoot by the way, and he has released a few solo LPs.
Here's my writeup of another song he did:
